However, pigs older than approximately 8 weeks appear to be resistant to infection. Strains of ETEC that cause diarrhea in pigs possess two types of virulence factors, adhesins and enterotoxins, both of which are essential for disease to occur.

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli infection induces tight junction proteins expression in mice

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) causes diarrhea in travelers, young children and piglets, but the precise pathogenesis of ETEC induced diarrhea is not fully known. Recent investigations have shown that tight junction (TJ) proteins and aquaporin 3 (AQP 3) are contributing factors in bacterial diarrhea. In this study, using immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry analyses, we found that E...

Production, Purification and Characterization of Chicken Egg Yolk Monoclonal Antibody Against Colonization factor antigen -1 of Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli Causing Diarrhea

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) causes diarrhea in both humans and animals. The contaminated food and water are the most common vehicles for ETEC infection. The colonization factor antigen (CFA-1) is a fimbriae protein that promotes adherence of the ETEC strain to the epithelium of the small intestine of the host. In this study IgY proteins were produced against the CFA-1 of ETEC in imm...

Increasing the viscosity of the intestinal contents stimulates proliferation of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli and Brachyspira pilosicoli in weaner pigs.

The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of increased viscosity of the intestinal digesta on proliferation of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli and the intestinal spirochaete Brachyspira pilosicoli in weaned pigs. Pigs were fed an experimental diet based on cooked white rice (R), which was supplemented with carboxymethylcellulose (CMC; 40 g/kg diet) to increase digesta viscosity. Th...

Genetic characterization and virulence of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli mutants which have lost virulence genes in vivo.

Loss of K99 and STaP genes from enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli 431 during infection occurred by either plasmid curing or plasmid deletion. These mutants expressed the F41 adhesion and colonized neonatal pigs, but only those mutants that retained STaP caused diarrhea with significant weight loss.

Dual infection with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus observed in weaning pigs that died suddenly.

Diarrhea, sudden death after short duration of diarrhea and sudden death without apparent signs were observed in a herd of breeder pigs. Five pigs that died suddenly with diarrhea (SDD pigs) and 6 pigs that died suddenly without signs (SD pigs) were examined. The average age of the pigs was about 28 days. Twelve pigs of age 10 to 14 days old showing diarrhea (D pigs) were also examined. Eleven ...
